October is the month Northeast Texas shows off. The big weekend of the month belongs to Gilmer, where the 89th East Texas Yamboree takes over Courthouse Square and City Park. One of the state's longest-running festivals, it has celebrated the humble sweet potato since 1935 with a carnival, three stages of live music, parades, a livestock show, and a Queen's Coronation. Neighbors from every surrounding county show up for it, and the Tater Trot 5K the weekend before gets everyone warmed up. From Omaha it is a little over an hour down the road: an easy day trip, or a chance to book a room and stay for the whole run.
Pumpkin Season, With a Paris Warm-Up
Before the Yamboree, Paris kicks off the season with Texas Fashion Week wrapping up at the start of October, a Red River Valley Fair that spills into the new month, and productions on stage at the Paris Community Theatre. If pumpkins are the priority, Yesterland Farm in Canton runs its Fall Festival through November 8 with a Texas-sized pumpkin patch, a corn maze, and more than 30 rides and attractions. It is the kind of place that fills an entire Saturday.
Two Lake Days, Both Close to Home
Anglers and campers have their pick. Lake Bob Sandlin State Park sits just southwest of Mount Pleasant, a short drive from Omaha, with a fishing pier where no license is required, a stocked trout pond, more than three miles of wooded trails, and cabins for a weekend stay. North of Paris, Pat Mayse Lake is a quiet Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on Sanders Creek where largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish keep boats busy, and the west campground stays open year-round. Two completely different fall weekends, both within an easy drive.
Coffee on the Paris Plaza
When you want a slow morning, park on the Plaza in Paris. Grab a cup at Huey's Coffee or breakfast at Corner Café right on the square, then wander the antique shops before heading home.
